Staying on Ozempic for weight loss in the long-term is expensive. Now what?

One reason GLP-1 drugs are tough for patients to take long-term is the cost... even without a telehealth subscription (expensive in its own right), the drugs are pricey. Doctors tell The Wall Street Journal that insurers are approving fewer patients’ prescriptions. And it’s not yet clear how to get off Ozempic and its ilk without regaining weight.

Verizon says it’s doing just fine.

Its wireless network “remains fully operational,” the company wrote this morning. But its customers could have issues connecting to users of “another carrier” —?AKA AT&T, which is suffering a widespread, ongoing outage.

How’s your AT&T connection right now?

The nationwide AT&T outage that began early, early this morning is still wreaking havoc on the network and has left many customers without mobile service. But there are sporadic reports of people regaining voice and data.

So, how are things looking in your area? Has this totally messed with your day? Is a disruption like this enough to get you thinking about switching providers?

Is the US on track to meet its climate goals?

Not yet, but there have been some gains since Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act and Inflation Reduction Act into law — two huge investments in clean energy and transportation. EV sales and clean energy additions to the power grid hit record highs last year, according to an analysis by researchers from Princeton, MIT, and Rhodium Group. But progress is expected to slow down unless the US can get rid of red tape that’s getting in the way.

TikTok music features are expanding.

Users in more than 160 new countries will be able to add music they find on TikTok to their streaming platform of choice, TikTok announced today. The “add to music app” feature launched in the US in November, integrating platforms like Spotify and Apple Music with the video app.

Music discovery is huge on TikTok, but the relationship between labels and the tech company are tenuous: earlier this month UMG pulled its entire catalogue from TikTok, including Taylor Swift and Drake, due to disagreements on compensation.

A nature doc, but make it ASMR.

The Apple TV Plus series Earthsounds is exactly what it, well, sounds like: a multi-part documentary that focuses on the soundscapes of the natural world. It’s narrated by Tom Hiddleston and is coming very soon, premiering on February 23rd.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a modern open-world RPG with the soul of 1997

The second game in the remake trilogy expands on the original in terms of both story and gameplay, and — despite a little filler — the additions are very welcome. Plus, it’s still super weird.

Honda Prologue first drive: a pretty good start

For a few years now, Meta’s Oversight Board has had the power to (very slowly, it seems) issue decisions determining how Facebook and Instagram should be moderated, and soon, the body will also be responsible for overseeing Threads.

Google is reportedly Reddit’s $60 million per year AI content licensing customer.

Charging for data access was a flash point for last year’s protests, with Reddit CEO Steve Huffman telling The Verge, “...data licensing is a new potential business for us.”

Now, with Reddit’s IPO launch close at hand, Reuters is putting a name on rumors of an AI company that’s paying Reddit for training data, in a deal that could be a model for similar arrangements, citing three sources who say the company is Google.

Lucid keeping it flat like Rivian.

Luxury EV maker Lucid Motors says it expects to produce only 9,000 vehicles in 2024, which is very close to the number it made in 2023 (8,428). That’s similar to Rivian’s 2024 outlook, in which the company said it would make 57,000 electric trucks, SUVs, and vans — basically the same as 2023. Add to that Tesla CEO Elon Musk warning of sales growth slowdown in the coming months, and boy, you’ve got yourself a stew going.

Gemini, Gemma, Goose.

These are just a few of the names that Google has bestowed upon its AI products in recent weeks.

Is it confusing for those of us on the outside to track all of these name changes? Yes. Yes, it is. And as Business Insider details in this fun story, even Google’s own employees are roasting the company by posting memes about it internally.

Meta is testing out Facebook cross-posts to Threads.

Meta is only rolling out the test to its Facebook iOS app, and not in the EU, the company confirmed to TechCrunch today. Threads posts already show up on Facebook, provided you don’t opt out.

TechCrunch writes that when user whimchic tried the feature in the Facebook iOS app, the post went to both platforms, but without any indication on Threads that it was a cross-post.

“Generative AI has hit the tipping point.”

As Nvidia reports its Q4 2023 earnings, CEO Jensen Huang says:

Accelerated computing and generative AI have hit the tipping point. Demand is surging worldwide across companies, industries and nations

That demand, and Nvidia’s dominance in AI chips, powered the company’s record earnings of $60.9 billion for the full year 2023 — a 126 percent increase from last year. Its Q4 revenue of $22.1 billion is an increase of an astounding 265 percent over the same period last year.

Foursquare’s founder is building a new app that broadcasts location-reliant info into your AirPods.

BeeBot will push brief, contextual audio snippets to wireless headphone users on the move. For example, if a user walks past a concert venue, it might list upcoming shows.

BeeBot, still in early development, is the brainchild of Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley, who came onto Alex Kantrowitz’s Big Technology Podcast to discuss the app.
