Avatar: The Last Airbender is everything that’s disappointing about Netflix’s live-action cartoon shows

Netflix’s live-action Avatar has its heart in the right place, but its pacing and uneven performances leave a lot to be desired.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a modern open-world RPG with the soul of 1997

The second game in the remake trilogy expands on the original in terms of both story and gameplay, and — despite a little filler — the additions are very welcome. Plus, it’s still super weird.

Krossplay is coming to Mortal Kombat 1.

That’s right, cross-platform kombat is coming to the NetherRealm Studios reboot of the classic fighting game.

Players can expect the feature in next week’s patch, and it will include support for PS5, Xbox, and PC, as announced by the game’s official account on X.

Apple is going to be stunned when it finds out how the Mac works.

The company put out a new statement today criticizing Spotify’s complaint to the EU about restrictions on its iOS app:

Fundamentally, their complaint is about trying to get limitless access to all of Apple’s tools without paying anything for the value Apple provides.

What kind of computing platform could possibly offer developers that kind of flexibility? Who would make such a thing?

Stop what you’re doing and turn on this Twitch stream right now.

Daft Punk (y’know the French electronica duo with the really cool helmets) is streaming their anime movie Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem on their official Twitch channel right now.

If you’ve never seen it, it’s great. If you’ve seen it a million times, watch it again. Or if you really like Daft Punk’s Discovery album and wonder what it would look like as feature length animated movie, then oh boy have I got a treat for you.

Issa López is coming back for more True Detective.

Night Country just wrapped up, and HBO has already confirmed that it’s being renewed for season 5, with López returning as showrunner. HBO says that it was the most watched season of True Detective yet, which might explain why it has signed López to a multiyear deal to “create content exclusive to HBO and Max.”

A nation of lurkers.

I’ve mused before on the correct number of posters and influencers vs lurkers required on text-based social networks — but refrained from commentary on video. (I don’t watch much.) Anyway this survey data suggests my theory applies there too: most people don’t post. That means posters are weird outliers who should be studied in a lab.

About half of TikTok’s users have never uploaded a video; a normal user hasn’t so much as updated their bio. Why, then, is TikTok successful? Posters.

Playdate, please.

Now that the Playdate is a little easier to actually purchase, Panic is showing off some upcoming games for the handheld. Its next showcase takes place on February 28th, and it’ll feature Mars After Midnight, the next game from Papers, Please and Return of Obra Dinn developer Lucas Pope.

TikTok music features are expanding.

Users in more than 160 new countries will be able to add music they find on TikTok to their streaming platform of choice, TikTok announced today. The “add to music app” feature launched in the US in November, integrating platforms like Spotify and Apple Music with the video app.

Music discovery is huge on TikTok, but the relationship between labels and the tech company are tenuous: earlier this month UMG pulled its entire catalogue from TikTok, including Taylor Swift and Drake, due to disagreements on compensation.

A nature doc, but make it ASMR.

The Apple TV Plus series Earthsounds is exactly what it, well, sounds like: a multi-part documentary that focuses on the soundscapes of the natural world. It’s narrated by Tom Hiddleston and is coming very soon, premiering on February 23rd.

Matt Levine has some thoughts about Reddit offering its stock to Redditors.

There are rumors the Reddit IPO is happening soon. Some of the most active Redditors may get the opportunity to buy in at the IPO price. Is a new meme stock in the making? Maybe!

In the 2020s, some companies are owned in large part by retail investors, and some of those investors are more interested in being part of an online community of investors, and trading jokes and memes, than they are in financial analysis. And you can make those investors happy in less traditional ways, like by giving them popcorn or buying a gold mine or doing a YouTube interview with no pants on.

Now you can sign into your PlayStation account without a password.

Passkey support is now available for Sony PlayStation accounts. Users can activate the feature in the security section of their Account Management settings on a PS5, PS4, computer, or mobile device.

PlayStation isn’t the first console to embrace the post-password future. Nintendo added support for passkeys last fall, enabling users to access their accounts with authentication methods such as iOS Face ID or the Android fingerprint sensor.

Update, Wednesday, February 21st, 2024, 5:02PM ET:?Updated to include new tweet from the Ask PlayStation Twitter account.

Who is Madame Web? “Mostly, she is a normal woman who hits people with her car.?“

Here’s JP Brammer on Madame Web’s appeal:

Madame Web is about PepsiCo Inc. There are multiple instances of unabashed product placement for Pepsi. Madame Web is not shy about reminding the audience about the crisp, refreshing taste of Pepsi.?

It’s also about carjacking. The cars she hits people with do not belong to her.

I cannot emphasize enough how trash this movie is. As someone whose last movie before the pandemic was Cats, I urge you to check it out.

Are you ready for an “ESPN-branded experience” in Horizon Worlds?

ESPN will start feeding VR content to the Meta Quest Xtadium app soon. That includes “immersive 180-degree VR” sports highlights from NCAA basketball and football games, interviews, and other content.

ESPN also says it will launch a Meta Horizon Worlds experience this summer. Whatever it is, it’s bound to make more sense than the ESPN phone.

Amazon’s Freevee is reportedly on its way out.

The company’s five-year-old ad-supported streaming service could still survive if users revolt against the introduction of ads in Prime Video, according to Adweek.

But even if it does sunset the Freevee app, Amazon will reportedly keep the free, ad-supported tier around, incorporating it into Prime Video and using Freevee content to draw customers and funnel them toward its paid tiers.

While you were studying the Erdtree, I studied the blade.

They got some Sekiro in my Elden Ring.

Tamoor Hussain from GameSpot noticed that the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has incorporated elements from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. In a part of the new trailer, it looks like a monster (or a Tarnished, can’t tell) is doing some flippy-dippy martial arts nonsense. Turns out it’s a move taken from one of the mini-bosses in Sekiro. Every FromSoftware game incorporates elements from its siblings and it’s neat to see those influences proliferate throughout.

I can’t wait for this DLC to ruin me.

Pew pew.

The original two Star Wars Battlefront games are making their way to modern platforms — while the collection was announced at a Nintendo Direct for the Switch, it’s also launching on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. Even better: the games will support up to 64 players online. The collection will be available on March 14th.

One crab’s trash, is another crab’s condo.

Another Crab’s Treasure, launching April 25th, was announced during today’s Nintendo Partner Direct. In it, you’ll play as a hermit crab who must wear whatever trash he can scavenge from the bottom of the ocean. The different trash homes provide protection as the little crab fights for a treasure that will help him win him back his repossessed shell.

In other words... a cutesy, fun game that hides the nasty realities of capitalism. I expect nothing less from Aggro Crab, the studio who also gave us Going Under.

Oh, Mother 3, where art thou?

The Japanese version of today’s Direct had a slightly different lineup of games, and included the news that Mother 3 is coming to Switch Online subscribers. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on an English version, but thankfully it’s not too hard to access online offerings from other regions.

One of the Wii’s most relaxing games is coming to the Switch.

It launches on May 2nd.

Mickey gets epic (again).

One of the first big reveals during today’s Nintendo showcase was a remaster of Epic Mickey, the 2010 platformer that originally debuted on the Wii, and involves the Disney mascot wielding a magical paintbrush. The updated version is called Rebrushed, and it drops later this year.

Nintendo Direct February 2024: all the news and trailers

Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 is back on track for a theatrical release... in 2025.

When Warner Bros. Discovery took Bong Joon-Ho’s new sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 off its 2024 release slate to make room for Godzilla, it seemed like the film might not get a theatrical run at all. But rather than pulling another Batgirl, it turns out WBD has just bumped the movie’s debut back to January 31st, 2025.

I’m at the combination Nintendo Direct / Elden Ring DLC trailer announcement.

The first of today’s big video game announcement events is the Nintendo Direct happening at 9 AM ET. Then, shortly after what Nintendo says will be a 25-minute presentation, FromSoftware will release the first trailer for Elden Ring’s first DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree at 10 AM ET.
