Established streaming industry leaders like Netflix and Amazon are facing more competition than ever. Now legacy entertainment giants are in the game with their own subscription services, like Peacock, HBO Max, Paramount Plus, and the Disney Plus / Hulu / ESPN Plus bundle, while Apple TV Plus attacks around the edges. Meanwhile, the rise of ad-supported free platforms like Roku Channel and Pluto TV has attracted enough attention that Plex, YouTube, and Amazon’s Freevee are trying to get a chunk of the action too.

Issa López is coming back for more True Detective.

Night Country just wrapped up, and HBO has already confirmed that it’s being renewed for season 5, with López returning as showrunner. HBO says that it was the most watched season of True Detective yet, which might explain why it has signed López to a multiyear deal to “create content exclusive to HBO and Max.”

A nature doc, but make it ASMR.

The Apple TV Plus series Earthsounds is exactly what it, well, sounds like: a multi-part documentary that focuses on the soundscapes of the natural world. It’s narrated by Tom Hiddleston and is coming very soon, premiering on February 23rd.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is everything that’s disappointing about 狈别迟蹿濒颈虫’蝉 live-action cartoon shows

Are you ready for an “ESPN-branded experience” in Horizon Worlds?

ESPN will start feeding VR content to the Meta Quest Xtadium app soon. That includes “immersive 180-degree VR” sports highlights from NCAA basketball and football games, interviews, and other content.

ESPN also says it will launch a Meta Horizon Worlds experience this summer. Whatever it is, it’s bound to make more sense than the ESPN phone.

Amazon’s Freevee is reportedly on its way out.

The company’s five-year-old ad-supported streaming service could still survive if users revolt against the introduction of ads in Prime Video, according to Adweek.

But even if it does sunset the Freevee app, Amazon will reportedly keep the free, ad-supported tier around, incorporating it into Prime Video and using Freevee content to draw customers and funnel them toward its paid tiers.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits Max next week.

You can start streaming the Aquaman sequel starting on Tuesday, February 27th.

As noted in my colleague Charles Pulliam-Moore’s review of the film, The Lost Kingdom has some stunning visuals, but it’s held back by a predictable storyline that makes it feel “like a product of the DCEU,” which has been plagued with issues over the past several years.

Nielsen stats show YouTube and Netflix dominating US TV streaming.

YouTube was the most-watched streaming option over the past 12 months, according to data from Nielsen. In January, YouTube accounted for 8.6 percent of usage in the US, followed by Netflix at 7.9 percent. That’s more than the next eight services combined.

Separately, YouTube says users around the world watched over 1 billion hours of content on the site’s TV app every day, while creators saw a 400 percent increase in watch time on TVs.

Here’s a full-length Netflix movie on YouTube.

Nimona is one of those films that just makes you grin when its over. It’s got charisma in spades and is an excellent, if long overdue, adaptation of graphic novel with the same name. Nimona comes from ND Stevenson, the cartoonist and creator of the similarly excellent She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.

And now if you’re too lazy to log into your Netflix account, or don’t even have one to begin with, you can watch the whole movie on YouTube!

Eight million people streamed the Super Bowl on YouTube TV.

With more than 8 million concurrent live streams for the event, spokesperson Allison Toh says Super Bowl LVIII is now the most-watched event ever on YouTube TV — and more broadly was the “most-watched telecast in history.”

TV is shaping up to be a focus for YouTube. Earlier in February, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced that the platform’s subscription TV service had more than 8 million subscribers.

Roku has crossed 80 million active accounts.

This afternoon Roku announced that it has surpassed 80 million active accounts. The company also said that customers streamed over 100 billion hours of content last year — the first time it has crossed that milestone.

Not bad when you consider that Roku hasn’t even released any new streaming gadgets recently. That lineup has been relatively stagnant while the company focuses on its self-branded TVs, with new, more premium models due this spring.

It’s been quite some time since Amazon shared data on how many people are actively using its competing Fire TV platform.

The sports streaming super app might face DOJ scrutiny.

The Department of Justice is planning to review the upcoming sports streaming app from ESPN, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Fox, according to a report from Bloomberg. Sources tell the outlet that regulators will look into whether the service will harm consumers, competitors, and sports leagues once the joint venture is finalized.

One live streaming service, Fubo, has already slammed the sports streaming app, saying it “could dictate market terms in a manner that may not serve the broader interests of consumers.”

The final season of Star Trek: Discovery begins April 4.

The show started mired in the past and has now journeyed to the far future where its characters peddle a brand of optimism that’s sorely needed. I’ll be bummed to see the show go.

As with previous seasons it will air exclusively on Paramount Plus, and the first two episodes will air back to back. As for the plot of the final voyage of this ship and crew? It will involve taking on an “ancient power”.

The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well…dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

Start guessing on which ancient evil will cameo in the comments.

Paramount is cutting 800 jobs as it looks to “grow revenue, while reducing costs.”

After rumors about layoffs emerged last month, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced that the company is laying off around 3 percent of staff. In a memo obtained by Deadline, Bakish tells employees the Super Bowl was a “blockbuster event” that “showcased the full power of Paramount.”

Despite this, the future of Paramount remains unclear, as Deadline reports that media companies and private equity firms are looking into acquiring “some or all” of the entertainment giant. CNBC reported last year that Warner Bros. Discovery was in talks to merge with Paramount.
